Thomas Byron "Bud" Pettit

Mr. Thomas Byron “Bud” Pettit, age 92, of Cedartown, Georgia passed away Monday, September 4, 2017.

Mr. Pettit was born in Cedartown, Georgia on September 17, 1924, a son of the late Thomas “Doc” Pettit and Hattie Barrett Pettit. Mr. Pettit lived most of his life in Cedartown and was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Cedartown where he always enjoyed serving as an church usher. After graduating from Cedartown High School, Mr. Pettit attended Clemson University until he was drafted into the United States Coast Guard. After serving his country he returned to Cedartown and married his sweetheart of 65 years, Gilda Kerns. Mr. Pettit retired from Georgia Kraft with 35 years of service before becoming a full-time cattle farmer on the family farm. Mr. Pettit was a member of the Polk County Farmers Club and was the treasurer of the Polk County Cattleman’s Club.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Gilda Kerns Pettit; daughter, Alice Rebecca “Becky” Pettit Caldwell.

Mr. Pettit is survived by his son and daughter in law, Gray and Milda Pettit of Cedartown; twin sister, Hattie Evangeline Wright “Sister” of Gainesville, GA; grandchildren: Stacie Caldwell Sanders, Ty Caldwell, Laurel Caldwell Womack. Mimi Caldwell Pope, Jennifer Pettit Benefield, Hattie Pettit Molidor, Gregory Pettit, Bridgette Pettit Brumit and Aaron Pettit; eighteen great grandchildren; several great great grandchildren also survive.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, September 6, 2017 in the Chapel of First Baptist Church from 2:00 PM until the service hour.

The memorial service to celebrate Mr. Thomas Byron “Bud” Pettit will be held Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at 3:00 PM in the Chapel of First Baptist Church with Dr. Dewayne New and Rev. Wayne Benefield officiating.

The family has requested that flowers be omitted and memorial donations can be made to the First Baptist Church Memorial Fund at P.O. Box 720 Cedartown, Georgia 30125.

The Keystone Sunday School Class will serve as honorary pallbearers.
