This is the story of Gregory Warren Haney. To some he was just Greg, to others he was more.
To his mother Greg was known as "son". Her second child born Oct. 7th 1963, Greg was a spirited young boy and like any youngster got into trouble a few times here and there. Something he used to like to say was that he was only afraid of two people... "God and mom". He'd then laugh and express his love for her. He truly loved his mother and he showed it in whatever way he could when he could. He was there for her and she was there for him, from the beginning to the end.
To his siblings, in his youth, he was known as "Gig". The story goes that when Greg was born his brother Davey had trouble pronouncing his name. Instead of "Greg" Davey could only muster up "Gig". It stuck. For years this was what he was called and every now and then a sibling will still call him by it. He was a good brother. If you needed something and he was able to provide it then he would do so, no matter what he had to go through to do it. He told stories of car rides and accidents, late night adventures, helping with Boy Scouts for his younger brothers; his memories were vast and he loved reliving them. He loved each and every one of his siblings til the day he died, often speaking of each one of them on a weekly or even nightly basis and it was always good memories and happy thoughts. You could tell that he loved his past and those that shared it with him.
To his children Greg was known as "Dad". He'd often talk of their youth and how proud he had been of each one as they grew up. He'd talk of Renee and where she had gotten in her life and he knew how hard she had worked to become the woman she had become. He'd talk of Elizabeth and point at a picture on the wall to say, "That's my only picture of her as an adult - wasn't she beautiful?" He'd mention Walter and how years ago Walter had participated in pageants and won almost every single one. He was proud of his children. He was also proud to be a grandfather, though he'd often say, "I don't want them to call me Paw-paw - I just want to be called Greg." He hated the thought of being old enough to be a Paw-paw but loved being the grandfather of such beautiful children. Through his stories you could tell he had a deep love for his family.
And to some Greg was known as "friend". He rarely met a stranger and often boasted of his friends from years gone by. He was generous and he was kind. He would feed those that needed it and shelter those in need when he could. He opened his door to anyone and loved a good conversation about life in general; he was a great listener. Greg was the epitome of good friend. He would try at times to give things away to show his love. He never liked receiving a gift without giving a gift in return. He loved a good joke and laughed greatly at funny videos or pranks. Greg was a man that understood where you were coming from because he had seen it all. He was the best friend you could have.
Loved ones that cleared the path for Greg are his brother David Neal Haney, his father David Clifton Haney, his daughter Mary Elizabeth Haney, and his sister Wanda Diane Haney Bowers.
He is survived by his mother, Mary Kathryn Patterson Haney; daughter, Kayla Renee Haney Smith & her three sons; son, Gregory Walter James Haney; three brothers, one sister, two uncles, one aunt and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Our Greg is no longer physically on this Earth but will forever be in the hearts and minds of those that loved him. A song quote he often spoke truly reflects who Greg was... "I'm just an old hippie don't know what to do; should I hang on to the old or grab on to the new." Greg will be missed greatly and will never be forgotten.
Thank you, Greg, for being our son, our brother, our cousin, our father, our grandfather, our uncle, and our friend.
The Smith & Miller Funeral Home of Cedartown is honored to serve the family of Mr. Gregory Haney.
