Dewey Daniel Thomas, Jr.

November 25, 1951 — August 7, 2025

Dewey Daniel Thomas, Jr., 73, passed away peacefully Thursday, August 7, 2025 in Rome, Georgia. He was born November 25, 1951 in Spencer, West Virginia to the late Dewey Daniel Thomas, Sr. and the late Frances Emma (Bowley) Thomas.

He married Debra Brown in 1973, and they settled in south Floyd County, Georgia. He was a veteran, having served for 1 year, 1972-1973, during the Vietnam War and earning a Bronze Star. He worked for the Rome Post Office for 35 years. Two years after retirement, he went to work for the Floyd County School System driving a special needs bus. He finally retired in May 2025, after 13 years. He was an active member of the Disabled American Veterans.

He cherished the time he spent with his family and his most beloved dog, Homer. Nothing thrilled him more than watching his grandson run 5Ks and play his musical instruments. He and Debbie were 2 halves of the same whole. They were always together going to estate sales, planting the garden, grilling, bird watching, and listening to old country and rock music. It is insufficient to say that he was the best husband, Daddy, Pawpaw, brother and friend. He loved with his whole heart and there is a void in our lives now that cannot be replaced.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Debbie Thomas; his daughter, Angie Thomas Barnes; his grandson, Matthew Thomas Barnes; his son-in-law, Richard Barnes; brothers, Jimmy, Mike, and Elmer (Tina) Thomas, all of New Smyrna Beach, Florida; sisters, Jeanine (John) Mattison, Williamsburg, Kentucky and Carla Thomas, New Smyrna Beach, Florida; sister-in-law Cici (Charles Booth) Burkhalter; and many nieces and nephews.

In keeping with his wishes, Mr. Thomas will be cremated. A reception will be held at Smith and Miller Funeral Home, Cedartown, Georgia, on Sunday, August 17, 2025 from 2:00 PM until 4:00 pm, with military honors being presented.

The Smith & Miller Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Mr. Dewey Daniel Thomas, Jr.
