Johnny Wayne Matthews

Mr. Johnny Wayne Matthews. age 76, passed away Tuesday, March 24, 2026.

Mr. Matthews was born October 11, 1949, in Cave Spring, Georgia, son of the late Odie Matthews and Ruby Morgan Matthews.

Mr. Matthews proudly served his country in the United States Army. He had a deep appreciation for antiques and enjoyed many afternoons spent “junkin,” always on the lookout for a hidden treasure. He was a devoted fan of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and the Atlanta Braves, rarely missing a chance to cheer them on. He also had a special fondness for Western movies. Mr. Matthews dedicated fifty years of hard work as a butcher at Piggly Wiggly, where he faithfully served his community before his retirement. He was a proud father and grandfather, and loved his family deeply. 

In addition to his parents, Mr. Matthews is preceded in death by a brother, Harland Matthews; and sisters, Betty Kerr and Grace Kerr.

Mr. Matthews is survived by Lynn Wright; son, Kevin Matthews and his wife, Tonya; grandchildren: Chandler McKelvey, and Campbell McKelvey; siblings: Jerry Matthews and his wife, Cathy, and Glenda Gill; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services to honor his life will be held Friday, March 27, 2026, in the chapel of Smith & Miller Funeral Home, at 1:00 PM, with Reverend Danny Tucker officiating. Interment will follow in Rehoboth Community Cemetery.

Mr. Matthews’ family will receive friends Thursday evening, March 26, 2026, at Smith & Miller Funeral Home, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
